Nokia expands multimedia line

Fran Foo | August 27, 2008

COMMUNICATIONS provider Nokia will expand its Nseries range with the launch of new multimedia mobile phones in Australia by March 2009.

The Nokia N79 smartphone and N85 mobile gaming handheld comes with the usual bells and whistles, including GPS navigation.

Like its rivals LG, Samsung and Sony Ericsson, both devices come with a 5 megapixel camera -- a feature also embedded in the older N95 model.

In the late 90s, Nokia successfully unseated Motorola as the world's largest mobile phone supplier, mainly by developing an easy-to-use user
interface deploying across its range of mobile phones.

Today, however, Nokia is trying to play catch-up with the likes of Samsung and more notably, Apple with its iPhone. Both have touchscreen products in the marketplace while Nokia's version could be released by the end of the year.

The Finnish company’s first stab at the touchscreen format was in 2003 with the Nokia 7700 series which was later discontinued.

Local pricing and availability would be revealed closer to launch date in the first quarter next year, a company spokesperson said.
