Primus bets on bill shock killer

Andrew Colley | August 27, 2008

PRIMUS Telecom has launched a capped mobile broadband service aimed at eliminating bill shock for consumers.

The company's residential division, iPrimus, has begun offering a monthly broadband service which throttles back to a slower speed after the customer has exhausted their monthly data allowance.

Customers that agree to sign up to pay a minimum of $49.95 per month for two years will receive a mobile broadband service and a monthly data allowance of 6GB.

iPrimus is also offering a high usage plan that provides a monthly allowance of 12GB for $79.95 per month.

Primus said the service was capable of speeds up to 3.6 Mbps.

But rather than facing excess usage charges which currently hover around 10 cents per megabyte, the speed of the mobile service drops to 64Kbps after the customer exhausts their monthly allowance.

Primus Australia CEO, Ravi Bhatia said: “Today’s consumers want the freedom to be online at any time and the existing mobile broadband pricing packages have potential risk for excessive and unexpected download charges, often amounting to several hundred dollars in a month."
